Chapter 347
"The doctor said that the fishbone was deeply stuck, but they managed to perform a surgery and took it out. But my throat got hurt, Mommy." Sidney pressed his lips together and said patiently.
"Oh, my goodness." Winnie felt heartbroken. She looked up and saw the handsome and mature man standing next to her. His hair was still damp, and the fresh scent of his recently showered body lingered beneath his shirt, emphasizing his muscular physique. Winnie was momentarily stunned, observing his refreshing appearance while her son was casually dressed.
She suddenly became dissatisfied. "Lawrence, look at how Sidney turned out, and you still have the mood to dress yourself up? Are you hurrying off to your date with Darcy? You look like an uncaring jerk with no paternal love."
Lawrence was furious at her remark. This woman not only failed to appreciate his handsomeness but also mocked him.
"I know, Mommy. Some people have no limits when it comes to competing for favor," Sidney pouted and added bitterly.
The father and son then locked eyes and exchanged a mixture of tenderness and teasing as if conveying, "I made you dress up more handsomely than me."
Although Winnie didn't understand much, she still patted her son's head and affirmed, "Of course, no one is as handsome as my Sidney."
"He's only this handsome because of me, as his father. Could you have produced such genes without me?" Lawrence bantered.
Winnie scoffed, "Are you being serious right now?" She strongly suspected that the man had an implicit motive. She then glared at the man and approached to pick up her son. Worried, she asked, "Is Sidney really in that serious condition? He had surgery?"
"Yeap." Lawrence immediately acknowledged his son's lie. Although the father and son had mocked each other, they were clearly united on the same front.
Winnie complained with a worried tone, "Men can be so careless. Can't you let Taylor pick out the fish bones for the child next time?"
"Mummy, you're blaming Daddy wrongly. He takes good care of me in this aspect. It's actually Darcy's fault for not picking out the bones for me when I had dinner at home today." The little one, in a critical moment, still spoke up for his father.
Finally understanding what had happened, Winnie lowered her gaze and said in a meaningful but cold voice, "Whether intentional or not, Sidney, you should stay away from Darcy next time."
If it were in the past, Lawrence would have immediately frowned and opposed. But this time, he just pursed his lips and remained silent. With a cold cough, the man looked down at the woman and said, "Sidney has a swollen throat. He hasn't eaten enough and needs some light food. Can you make it?"
"You don't even have to ask; I will do it regardless," Winnie replied, raising her head without any pretense of politeness. She looked back at her son and said, "Sidney, Mommy will take you to buy groceries now. You're still growing, so you need to eat enough." After saying that, she walked out with her son.
Lawrence quickly caught up with the mother and son, and his lips unconsciously curved up.
At the hospital entrance, Winnie looked at the shameless man who just entered her car and felt a bit annoyed. "Why did you get in? You can go back home now."
"Do you believe I would leave my son solely in your care?" Lawrence turned his head, his handsome face illuminated by the sunlight, yet unable to conceal his less-than-ideal qualities.
"With our divorced relationship, I have the right to visit my son, and your presence is unnecessary!"
"What if you turn him against me, his father? I must keep an eye on both of you."
Speechless, Winnie was tempted to kick him away. Her son was hungry, and there was no time to argue with him. Angrily, she got into the driver's seat, gripping the steering wheel tightly, and repeatedly pinched it.
Lawrence turned his head to look out the window. The hard angles of his face inadvertently softened to the point where he didn't even notice it himself.
The three of them arrived at the supermarket, with Sidney sitting in the shopping cart pushed by Winnie, his little head looking around.
Winnie glanced at her son and thought about something, so she quietly asked, "Did you contact Oscar?"
Suddenly, as they were walking down the aisles, Lawrence noticed several men gazing at Winnie inappropriately. He scoffed, "Winnie, why did you have to wear this today? You're attracting unnecessary attention."
Winnie turned to face him, slightly annoyed. "I wore black stockings today. Damn, Do I look like I would know that wearing a pencil skirt and black stockings challenges a man's limit?"
Lawrence couldn't help but wish he could take off his suit jacket and wrap it around her as he continued to notice occasional glances from men nearby. He coldly stared back at those sinister and chilly gazes.
Unbeknownst to Winnie, as she lowered her head to pick up a vegetable, she realized that the surroundings had become unusually quiet, and when she looked up, there wasn't a single man in sight. Speechless, she glanced at Lawrence knowing that it was his powerful presence that scared them away.
"Mummy, I want to eat canned peaches," Sidney said, pointing his finger toward the shelf.
Winnie nodded and walked over, only to find the canned peaches placed on the top shelf. Even with her wearing high heels, she couldn't reach them.
"No, canned peaches are too sweet." Lawrence furrowed his brows and sternly voiced his opinion like a strict father.
However, considering that it was Winnie's first time bringing Sidney out for grocery shopping, she wanted to indulge him a little. "It won't cause tooth decay if you have it once."
"You spoil him too much," Lawrence said firmly, adhering to his principles.
Sidney was completely speechless. The focus was supposed to be on the canned peaches, placed on the top shelf, and the fact that his mother couldn't reach it. Despite Sidney's desire for his father to help her out, he seemed to be oblivious to the situation. He was getting anxious and desperately pulled at his father's sleeve.
Lawrence frowned and lowered his head with displeasure. "Don't bargain with daddy."
Sidney rolled his eyes fiercely and gritted his teeth, uttering each syllable loudly, "Top shelf, mummy can't reach, you understand? After going through so much trouble to give you an opportunity, you just know how to ruin it with your abilities." The look in his eyes couldn't be more disdainful.
It finally clicked in him as Lawrence wondered to himself, 'Why didn't he say it earlier?' Living past thirty, yet still being lectured by his son, Lawrence couldn't help but twitch his mouth harshly.
Narrowing his profound eyes, the man stared at Winnie tiptoeing and trying to reach the can with her fingers, but failing. He lightly pressed his lips, and the next moment, his majestic figure leaned over.
Winnie only felt a rush of warmth behind her and a shadow cast over her head. Right after that, the can she was trying to reach landed in Lawrence's hand. His big hand was rough but slender, his joints were distinct, and they looked exceptionally beautiful against the glass jar. She was momentarily stunned by the attractiveness of his fingers.
"Is this the one?" Lawrence's magnetic voice whispered by her ear as his mouth lightly brushed against her hair, making her earlobe itch.
The woman in his arms blushed momentarily, quickly evading him. "No," she coldly replied.
His intense gaze landed on her tightly pursed lips, and Lawrence's breath grew heavy. "Then which one is it?"
