Chapter 234
Mia's heart was shattered; she couldn't believe her husband had just up and left her.
"Jasper, you jerk! Get back here, now!" Mia screamed, reaching out helplessly.
Two guys in black suits were lurking nearby, hiding around the corner, hesitant to show themselves.
"What do we do now? We were supposed to act like we were chasing them, but now she's just lying there. How do we keep this up?" one of the men whispered to his buddy.
The other guy hesitated, then called Mike. "Mr. Runyon, we've got a situation. Jasper ditched his wife and took off. Should we split up to track them?"
Mike frowned and replied, "Stall for a bit, don't rush. Capture Mia, but make sure she has a chance to escape. The main character hasn't shown up yet!"
The main character Mike was talking about was Isabella. She got a call from Michael, called the cops, and was on her way with them.
After getting Mike's orders, the two guys knew what to do.
They pretended to stumble upon Mia and started shooting in her direction.
Terrified, Mia, despite her pain, forced herself up and kept running. She found a room to hide in, covering herself with old cardboard, hoping it would keep her safe.
When the two men entered the room, they saw a piece of clothing sticking out from the cardboard and exchanged a look.
"What now? Should we pretend we didn't see her?" one whispered.
His buddy smirked. "Damn, where'd that woman go? If I catch her, I'll strip her and pose her in different positions!"
Mia, hidden behind the cardboard, shook even more, her fear growing with every word.
The other guy looked surprised at first, then caught on. They started talking trash.
"No way! You're into cougars? What, did you have a rough childhood or something?"
"You're missing out, man. Older women are like fine wine; they age like a dream."
"Wow, you've got a taste all right. Those wrinkles aren't my thing; I'm all about young, lively girls."
"You don't get it. Let me break it down for you. You give an older woman a little tap on the rear, and she knows you're ready to switch it up. But with a young chick, she might be clueless about your intentions."
"Sounds like you've got a lot of experience! You make sense, but I still prefer young girls, and some young boys."
"What did you just say? You're into guys as well? That's why you've been eyeing me like you've got some plans in mind."
"Don't stress, I've got self-control. But I can't ignore that scent you're rockin'. You smell so good."
"You damn jerk, if you come near me, I'll disable your reproductive organs."
The two men continued their heated argument at the entrance of the abandoned room.
On the other side, Mike's face darkened as he listened to the argument coming through his earpiece. He had instructed these men to delay, but not with such dirty banter!
Just then, one of his subordinates came in and whispered a few words to him. Mike's eyes lit up instantly.
"This scene can finally come to an end!" Mike whispered some orders into his earpiece, and the guys in black suits quickly backed off.
The two guys trash-talking by the door heard Mike's message too.
One of them purposely raised his voice, "Oh man, those gunshots have drawn attention! Cops are swarming in from the south. Time to bail, fast!"
The other one added, "Damn, we haven't completed the mission! We can't frame Isabella for killing Jasper and Mia."
"If you don't mind being shot dead by the police, then you can stay and finish this damn mission."
"I'm not interested. That cash ain't worth putting my life on the line for."
Mia, hiding behind the cardboard, was shocked to realize that those chasing her might not have been sent by Isabella after all.
On the other side, Paxton's subordinates noticed the gunshots had stopped and immediately guessed that the group had run out of bullets. They rushed excitedly towards them.
On the way, Paxton's subordinates encountered a body.
As they were about to step over the body, the person lying on the ground suddenly opened his eyes and viciously stabbed one of them in the chest with a knife.
"Damn, he's playing dead!" someone shouted, and a barrage of bullets was fired at the pretending dead man.
This person who played dead was Daron.
Paxton's and John's guys had wiped out his crew, leaving him as the last man standing.
Facing the barrage of bullets, Daron couldn't even draw his knife in time, rolling on the ground to dodge the incoming bullets.
Daron hid behind a wall, feeling utterly doomed, and his heart was beating like it was going to explode.
But at that moment, the sound of police sirens blared around them, startling everyone.
"Damn, why are the police here? Grab our dead bodies and let's get out of here!" someone yelled.
Paxton's subordinates immediately hoisted their fallen comrades onto their shoulders and hurriedly retreated.
Upon hearing the police sirens, Daron was almost moved to tears. In the past, such a sound would have filled him with fear, but now it signaled his salvation.
"I don't know who called the cops, but thanks! Hope you don't end up in the same hellhole as us when you kick the bucket," Daron said, then took off.
On the other side, Isabella, sitting in the police car, wore a very serious expression.
