Chapter 310
Isabella was totally floored by the blast from the grenade.
Even though Leo took most of the hit, she still felt like puking, probably from some internal injuries.
But then she saw Leo sprawled on top of her, blood trickling from his mouth, eyes shut, looking dead as a doornail.
"Leo, hang in there! Don't you dare die on me!" Isabella yelled.
No matter how much she screamed, Leo just wouldn't wake up.
Furious, Isabella grabbed a gun and started firing at the thugs. She managed to hit two of them, but most of her shots just hit the trees.
When she ran out of bullets, she broke down, clutching Leo and crying.
"You bastards, if I survive this, I swear I'll hunt every one of you down," she snarled, her eyes blazing with hatred.
Just as the thugs closed in, guns aimed at her, a bullet suddenly took out the guy in front. More shots followed, coming from all directions.
Cops in uniform started shooting, hitting the thugs in their hands and feet, making sure they couldn't run.
Michael came rushing in with a gun, and his face went pale when he saw Isabella and Leo on the ground.
"Get them to the ambulance, now!" Michael shouted, and two officers quickly lifted them and ran towards the ambulance.
"Michael, you finally made it. Please, save Leo. He got hurt protecting me," Isabella sobbed, collapsing into Michael's arms.
"Don't worry, he'll be okay," Michael assured her, carrying her out of the forest and signaling to the officers.
One of the officers nodded.
After Michael left, the officer said, "Mr. Williams is pissed we didn't protect Mrs. Williams. We can't screw up again. Get all the info he wants in 3 minutes!"
Soon, the screams of the thugs echoed through the woods.
Isabella stayed by Leo's side until the ambulance left the forest. Consumed with sadness and worry, she failed to notice that those suspicious officers were not driving police cars.
Outside the operating room, Isabella sat quietly, waiting. Michael was right there with her.
The doctor checked her out and found her internal organs were a bit shaken up but not too bad. Her worst injuries were just some scrapes and bruises.
Isabella cried in Michael's arms, "Leo got hurt because of me. He has a wife and kids. If he dies, I don't know how I'll face his family."
Michael hugged her tight, "He'll be fine, I promise."
"Leo's just a driver, but he protected me like a real bodyguard. His family thought being a bodyguard was too dangerous, so they made him a driver. And now I've put him in danger again," Isabella said, feeling guilty.
Michael felt a pang of guilt. He hadn't been honest with Isabella about Leo. The whole story about Leo being a driver with a family was a lie; Leo was always a bodyguard and didn't have a family.
'If something happens to Leo, I might have to hire a couple of actors to play his family,' Michael thought, feeling helpless.
Just then, the lights in the operating room went out, and the doctor walked out.
Isabella rushed over, her voice trembling, "How is he, doctor?"
The doctor looked calm. "Don't worry, the surgery went well. The grenade was low-quality and not very powerful. The worst injuries were from the two gunshots, which caused him to lose some blood. The grenade fragments only got into his muscles and didn't reach any vital organs. We've removed all the shrapnel. He just needs plenty of rest now."
"Thank goodness, thank you, doctor," Isabella said, feeling a wave of relief wash over her.
Michael hugged her and smiled. "See, I told you he'd be okay. Now we just need to take care of Leo and figure out how to get back at those who did this."
Michael quickly changed the subject, worried Isabella might try to contact Leo's non-existent family.
Sure enough, Michael successfully diverted her attention, and a look of determination flashed in her eyes.
"You're right, I need to find out who tried to kill me! I won't let them get away with this," Isabella said, clenching her fists.
Michael nodded. "The police must have caught some of the thugs. Maybe they can tell us who's behind all this."
Just then, Michael's phone rang. It was Jerry.
Michael's eyes narrowed. If he was right, Jerry's call was probably about the thugs.
"Mr. Williams, I just got back from the police station. They found out the person targeting Isabella is from her company. They arrested him. It's kind of funny, he was about to jump off a building but chickened out, and the firefighters nabbed him," Jerry said.
Michael squinted. "How could a coward like him hire hitmen to kill someone?"
Isabella nodded. "Exactly, Jerry, did you find out anything else?"
Jerry was startled. He had guessed Isabella was probably with Michael, so he tried to avoid mentioning Michael's identity. It seemed he was right.
Jerry continued, "Mrs. Williams, we did find something else. This guy is just a regular employee at your company, with no money to hire hitmen. But last night, a large sum of money was deposited into his account. We traced it back to someone named Duncan."
Anger flashed in Isabella's eyes. "I know him. That jerk caused the death of a female employee. The first thing I'll do as CEO is take him down!"
