Chapter 337
Michael picked up Charles' call and asked what was going on.
Charles, sounding serious, filled Michael in on how John and Bianca had set up Isabella.
To Charles' surprise, Michael stayed cool as a cucumber.
"Mr. Williams, did you already know about this?" Charles asked, shocked.
Michael didn't beat around the bush and nodded. "Yeah, I knew for a while, but I didn't tell Mason because I didn't want to stress him out."
Charles let out a sigh. "Got it. Please handle this and keep it on the down-low. We don't want the other families finding out."
Michael agreed to take care of it.
"Isabella probably didn't want this to blow up. If she did, she would've told Mason herself, and we wouldn't be in this mess," Michael sighed, then made another call to get things under control.
He told Jerry and Mike to keep a close eye on the police station and Isabella's company, thinking those were the hotspots for trouble.
There were always spies from the big families at the police station. News of Bianca and John being taken in would spread fast. The goal was to squash it before the spies got wind of it.
Even though Isabella had told Michael that only Officer Brenda was in the meeting room at the time, and the other officers just followed her orders without knowing what was up, Michael wasn't fully convinced Brenda could keep it all under wraps.
As for the higher-ups at Isabella's company, they were even sketchier.
The ones who stayed on were more likely to keep quiet to stay on Isabella's good side. But those about to get the boot might spill the beans to the other big families out of spite.
Who wanted Mason gone the most? Definitely the other three big families. If Mason went down, the Williams Family would lose its backbone, making it easier for them to strike.
While Michael was setting things in motion, Isabella finally got to the police station.
When she arrived, she found out John hadn't said a word in the interrogation room.
Just like Brenda guessed, John's first words at the station were, "I want my lawyer."
Hearing this, Isabella just shook her head and smiled, not too worried.
Given John's status, even with solid evidence, arresting him wouldn't be a walk in the park. But having Bianca under control was a win.
As a witness, Isabella was questioned by Brenda. She told Brenda to keep it hush-hush and not to tell her colleagues.
Brenda nodded, getting the picture. "Don't worry, I'm not that naive. A lot of people still don't know why Bianca and John were arrested. If the other three major families catch wind of this, they might use it against Mason. If Mason gets hurt, the Williams Family won't let it slide, and we could see riots in the city."
Brenda sighed, sometimes thinking the city would be better off without the four major families.
Isabella was pleased with Brenda's approach and started explaining how Bianca and John had set her up.
The interrogation didn't take long. When Isabella stepped out, she saw John getting into a car and leaving.
Brenda frowned. Even with John's influence, he shouldn't have been released so quickly; something was up.
Brenda quickly asked who had interrogated John and was shocked to find out it was the police chief, Alan.
"Isabella, wait here. I'm going to talk to Mr. Savage," Brenda said before storming into Alan's office.
"Alan, I need an explanation. Why did you let John go? He's still a suspect, isn't he?" Brenda demanded, glaring at Alan.
Alan barely looked at her and waved dismissively. "The evidence you have only ties Bianca to faking illness, bribing medical staff, and trying to take Isabella's kidney. None of it links John to these actions."
Brenda was almost laughing in disbelief. "Alan, are you serious? Without John's go-ahead, would Bianca have the guts to harm Isabella?"
Alan sighed, "Let me repeat, you have no evidence."
Brenda coldly asked, "Just tell me, what did John give you in return?"
Alan slammed the table in anger. "Do you think I'm corrupt? How many times do I have to say it? Unless Bianca accuses John of ordering her, you'll never catch him!"
Brenda stared at Alan, then turned and left, fuming.
Alan wasn't wrong. The evidence Brenda had wasn't enough to nail John. She was frustrated, imagining herself in Isabella's shoes-betrayed by her lover and sister, nearly dying on the operating table. The despair was overwhelming.
When Brenda saw Isabella again, she apologized, "I'm sorry I couldn't keep John here."
Isabella had expected this and smiled, "Is it because of insufficient evidence?"
Brenda nodded silently.
Isabella hugged Brenda. "Thank you, Officer Pena. I knew this might happen. Don't blame yourself. You're a good cop, just born in the wrong era."
