Chapter 380
Michael's top brass, the ones with access to customer info, have been with him forever. Jerry can't wrap his head around the idea that someone would stab Michael in the back.
Michael glanced up at Jerry, a grin spreading across his face. "So, who do you think did it?"
Jerry frowned, shaking his head. "I don't know, but I've got a few suspects. I've had them watched. I bet Ryan offered a fat paycheck to the traitor, and they couldn't resist."
"Human desires are like a snowball rolling down a hill; once it starts, it just keeps going. Is that what you're getting at?" Michael kept grinning at Jerry.
Jerry nodded but then went quiet for a bit. "Or maybe the traitor got caught in a bind, and Ryan blackmailed them. That's totally Ryan's style."
Jerry probably remembered that time Isabella strong-armed those minority shareholders into giving up their shares.
Michael stretched and got up from the couch. "Both your theories are solid, but I've got a third one."
"What other theory?" Jerry looked puzzled.
Michael walked over to the liquor cabinet and poured two glasses of wine.
"Isabella always brings work home and sometimes asks me about tricky business stuff. So, I've got a pretty good handle on what's going on at her company," Michael said with a smile.
Jerry caught on quickly. Holding his glass, he asked, "Mr. Williams, are you saying a senior manager took files home and their family spilled the beans?"
Michael nodded. "We can't rule it out. You know what to do now, right?"
Jerry nodded. "Got it. I'll put more eyes on the families of those senior managers."
Michael shook his head, still smiling. "If word gets out, it'll drive a wedge between us and the other senior managers. Ryan might be banking on that."
Jerry hesitated, a cold sweat breaking out on his back. If he went through with his plan, he might catch the mole, but the other senior managers would think Michael was threatening their families, causing a rift and maybe even pushing them towards Ryan.
Jerry looked at Michael, wanting to ask what to do next.
But Michael's calm gaze made Jerry's heart race. He knew Michael was testing him.
Frowning, Jerry thought for a moment, then his eyes lit up. "Tracking takes too long. Maybe we should go for a simpler approach, like direct questioning. I'll get the best psychologist to grill those senior managers."
Michael nodded, pleased. "Sounds like a plan. Go for it."
Jerry downed his wine and left the office.
After Jerry left, Michael sipped his wine and let out a soft sigh. He was really hoping it was the third scenario he mentioned, rather than the first two Jerry brought up.
He had a soft spot for these long-time employees who had been with him through thick and thin. The last thing he wanted was to find a traitor among them.
After spending nearly a week abroad, Michael finally wrapped up those pesky matters.
After sealing the deal with the last client, Michael booked a flight home that night. He couldn't wait to see Isabella.
As soon as Michael got in the car, Jerry hit him with some news.
"Mr. Williams, after a week of digging, we've got our prime suspect." Jerry handed a document to Michael.
Michael raised an eyebrow as he looked at the document. "Anson and his wife? They've been married for less than a year, right?"
Michael remembered Anson Church, the youngest and most promising employee.
Anson was a hardworking guy. Thanks to Michael's promotion, Anson had always been loyal and would never betray the company. Plus, he had a clean record, so no one could have any dirt on him.
When Jerry handed over the info about Anson's wife, Michael knew she had to be the problem.
Jerry nodded. "Yeah, Anson was too busy with work to get married until he met his wife at a banquet, and then they tied the knot. You even went to his wedding."
Michael nodded, signaling Jerry to go on. "I consulted the best psychologist, Mr. Rojas. We questioned different senior managers. When we asked Mr. Church about bringing work files home, he hesitated for a moment and then claimed he left the files at the office that night. Mr. Rojas picked up on that hesitation." Jerry recounted the interrogation process.
Michael listened calmly and finally sighed. "Anson has always been all about his work. Now that he finally has a woman he loves deeply, he wouldn't give that up easily. Maybe he's still holding out hope and wants to ask his wife if she did anything to harm the company."
Jerry asked seriously, "Should we punish Anson and his wife?"
Michael shook his head. "Don't worry about Anson betraying us. With his character, he wouldn't do such a thing. Once he finds out his wife betrayed him, he'll probably resign and leave this profession."
Michael rubbed his forehead and then smiled. "Never thought I'd have to worry about my employees' marriages as a boss."
Michael shook his head with a smile, then his expression turned serious. "Go find Anson and tell him I don't blame him for this. Ryan will likely use this to threaten Anson with his wife as leverage. That sneaky fox likes to hide in his den, so I need someone to go in and flush him out."
Jerry got it. Anson would be the perfect pawn to deal with Ryan.
