Chapter 447

Dominic wasn't buying what the cop in front of him was selling. He had a hunch the officer was in cahoots with those three guys, trying to pull a fast one on him.

"Get out of my way, I need to make a call. Don't even think about stopping me," Dominic barked, grabbing the phone and dialing Paxton's number.

The cops just stood there, smirking at him.

Dominic anxiously waited for the call to go through.

After what felt like forever, someone finally picked up. Dominic's face lit up, while the cops looked even more amused.

"Mr. Brown, it's Dominic. Three execs from the Taylor Family have turned on the company. I need you to fire them," Dominic said, shooting a triumphant look at the three execs. But they didn't even flinch.

A bad feeling started creeping over Dominic, especially when the other end of the line stayed silent.

"Mr. Brown, say something! It's really me, Dominic! We met at that family gathering, remember? You even said I was doing a great job," Dominic tried to jog Paxton's memory.

But then a woman's voice came through. "I'm sorry, Dominic, Paxton can't take your call right now."

"Who are you? Mrs. Brown? No, you don't sound like her. Who are you?" Dominic shouted, panic rising in his voice.

The woman replied, "I'm a police officer. This is the police station. Mr. Brown's phone is evidence now. And as for Mrs. Brown, I'm sorry, but she's deceased too."

Dominic's lips trembled as he listened, the phone slipping from his hand in disbelief.

"Alright, Dominic, if you still don't believe it, come with us to the station. You can see Mr. Brown one last time. But hurry, or his family might take his body back," a cop taunted, leading Dominic out of the office.

"No, Mr. Brown can't be dead. This has to be some kind of trick. You must be using high-tech gadgets to fool me," Dominic kept muttering, his lips trembling, as they took him to the station in a patrol car.

When Dominic saw Paxton's body, despair washed over his face. He wasn't the only one. The station was full of people like Dominic, all refusing to believe Paxton was dead until they saw his body, then breaking down in despair.

Meanwhile, Police Chief Alan was flipping through three diaries that had been sent to the station along with a video file, anonymously. The contents were pretty juicy.

The diaries detailed info about illegal immigrants and middlemen, and it all checked out. They had enough to make arrests that would wipe out half the city's smuggling operations!

The video file showed Paxton ordering his guys to toss Francis into molten steel. Alan grimaced at Paxton's twisted actions and shut off the video. He then called Brenda to let her know she could come home tomorrow.

Brenda, who was miles away in Avalonia, had no clue what was going down back home. When Alan filled her in, she was left speechless.

"Alan, are you serious? Paxton found out who hurt his daughter, went after Isabella and her husband, and got killed in the process? Did I get it wrong before? Was it really Ms. Taylor who did that to Pearl?" Brenda asked, stunned.

"If you can't promise to drop this investigation when you get back, you might as well stay abroad," Alan said coolly.

Brenda went quiet. One of the big family leaders got taken out just like that, and she was just a regular cop. Did she really have what it took to handle this?

"I miss you and Auntie. I'll be back tomorrow. Don't worry, I won't dig into this anymore," Brenda assured him.

Alan didn't buy it. She'd made too many promises she never kept.

"If you lie to me again, you'll be stuck handling traffic at the transportation department. I'm not joking," Alan said, hanging up before she could argue.

Brenda slammed the table in frustration. "Damn power!"

"You damn bastards! I'm the most senior member of the family, I should be in charge," Damian shouted, pounding the table.

But the other members of the Brown Family just looked at Damian with mocking eyes.

After Paxton's death, instead of going for revenge right away, they decided to pick a new leader. The top contender was Colin. He was mentioned in those three diaries, which John had forged to frame him and make Paxton think there was an internal conflict. But John wasn't the only one with that idea.

Unfortunately, Colin wasn't around because he got hit by a stray bullet when Jerry and the others were attacking Paxton.

With Colin out of the picture, the remaining Brown Family members were all on equal footing, and everyone wanted to be the top dog. But no one was willing to step aside.

"I've bled for this family, I've been injured for this family, I deserve to be the leader," a man roared, slamming the table.

But a woman shot back, "Who hasn't sacrificed for the family? Plus, all the properties Paxton gave you are losing money. How dare you think you can lead?"

The man glared at the woman, who stared right back, unflinching.
