Chapter 267

On the other side, Isabella watched as the doctor wheeled an unconscious Jasper back into the ward.

Jasper lay still, clinging to life by a thread. He was lucky the bullet hadn't killed him.

Michael saw Isabella and walked over, gently wrapping his arms around her. "How's your dad? Is he hurt bad?"

Isabella shook her head and pulled a phone from her pocket, its screen shattered by a bullet.

"My dad's really lucky. The bullet went through this phone and stopped less than an inch from his heart. Even the doctor said he's one lucky guy. The doc even joked that he must be a devout believer," Isabella chuckled, knowing her father's greedy nature left little room for piety.

Michael's eyes flickered as he took the phone from Isabella, lost in thought.

"Now we've got the video evidence to get the shares. But the big question is, how do we get our hands on the money my dad embezzled?" Isabella said, feeling a headache coming on.

No one knew when Jasper would wake up. If he didn't, the money was gone for good.

"Didn't we hire a private detective to look into this? I'm sure he'll find something. Maybe this is just a test from above for you," Michael smiled at Isabella.

Just then, several police officers approached. Jasper was a wanted criminal, and even though he was unconscious, they still had to follow procedures.

"Hey, Ms. Taylor, good to see you again," the female officer greeted Isabella with a nod and a smile.

Isabella recognized the officer; they'd crossed paths many times before.

"Anything I can help you with, Officer?" Isabella asked, keeping her voice steady.

"First off, we're really sorry about your dad's injury. We hope he pulls through," the officer said, her smile polite but a bit forced.

Isabella waved her hand dismissively. "No need for the formalities, Officer. Just get to the point."

"Alright, Isabella, can you tell me how your dad got hurt?" the officer finally asked, cutting to the chase.

Isabella had nothing to hide. Everything she'd done was above board, and she was the one who had called the police. She had no reason to worry.

"My mom told me where my dad might be, so my husband and I went to check it out. When we got there, we heard gunshots. We were scared, so we hid in a bungalow across the street. Then my dad came out of an underground tunnel," Isabella explained, tweaking the timeline a bit but leaving out John to avoid any suspicion about his ties to Jasper.

"What happened next? Your dad came out of the tunnel, and then?" the officer asked, pen ready to jot down every detail.

Isabella continued, "My dad begged me not to send him to jail. As his daughter, it was a tough call. We hesitated, and he took off, got shot in the process. Lucky you showed up when you did."

Isabella gave a quick rundown of the incident, leaving out a lot of details, but she figured it was enough to satisfy the cops.

The officer, a veteran cop, knew right away Isabella wasn't telling the whole truth.

"Isabella, you and your husband only heard gunshots? You didn't see anyone else suspicious? If you did, you need to tell us. It's important," the officer said, her tone serious.

Isabella shook her head. "Sorry, Officer, we really didn't see anyone. The gunfire was intense, like a war zone. We were scared and hid behind a wall, afraid of getting hit."

The officer sighed, realizing she wasn't going to get any more information.

The city was buzzing that night, with a major clash between the Williams Family and the Brown Family, even involving guns!

The hospital was packed with gunshot victims. And the morgue was busy too, with many people not making it.

'Those rich families, they don't give a damn about human life,' the officer thought.

The female officer could tell that Isabella knew something, but she wasn't willing to talk. As a cop, she couldn't accept Isabella's silence. But Isabella, being a former heiress of a powerful family, knew some things had to be handled internally, without involving the law.

The officer sighed and said, "Alright, Isabella, one last question. Does your father have anything on him that could help us with the investigation?"

Isabella's eyes flickered as she remembered the phone that had been hit by a bullet.

Before she could respond, Michael stepped in, shaking his head. "Right before the doctor took Mr. Taylor to surgery, he gave us a few things-a phone, some cash, and half a sandwich."

These were the items Jasper had taken from his assistant, Micah. The phone and card John had given to Jasper were with Isabella, and Michael knew about them. He planned to keep those two items hidden.

The officer, aware of Jasper taking Micah's belongings, sighed, hoping Isabella would hand over what they needed for the investigation.

Isabella nodded and handed over Jasper's things to the officer, watching her leave.

Once the officer was gone, Isabella turned to Michael, expecting an explanation.

In Michael's hand were the phone hit by the bullet and the bank card.

"Babe, Jasper was clutching this phone like it was gold. Maybe it's got what we need. You know the cops have snitches from all four big families. If we hand this over to them, they'll find out in no time. We gotta check this out ourselves. And that bank card? That's gotta be the cash John gave your dad for the deal. But now, it's ours!" Michael grinned slyly.
